once we were stardust
distributing nebulae with every heave
we were memories,
knocks on wood,
or hummed melodies through running water
i have been the universe,
or roaring water
the moon beyond me,
the shore away
i have been wrong,
the mud on earth's tennis shoes,
the tulips,
the roots
because maybe Aphrodite
has forgiven me.
